Sunday afternoon, a crash on Highway 99E about two miles those of Oregon City closed the highway for several hours.  Oregon State Police report a Suzuki Swift subcompact passenger car driven by Kris Kuykendall, age 52, from Canby, was northbound on Highway 99E near milepost 16 when it crossed into the left southbound lane and sideswiped a Nissan Maxima. The Suzuki continued in the left southbound lane and sideswiped a Pontiac passenger car, then traveled into the right southbound lane where it collided into the drive axle of a commercial truck pulling a semi-trailer.

The impact with the truck ruptured one of the truck's diesel tanks, broke two heavy suspension mounting brackets, and ejected the Suzuki's engine from the engine compartment. Debris associated with the mutliple vehicles involved in the crash covered an extensive area of the highway. Approximately 40 gallons of diesel spilled before being contained by fire personnel. NRC Environmental Services responded to clean up the diesel spill.

Kuykendal was pronounced deceased at the scene and extricated by fire personnel. He was using safety restraints.

The truck's driver, Eugene Haase, age 76, from Allen, Texas, was not injured.

None of the people in the other vehicles was injured.

Traffic was blocked in both directions with a detour in place during the closure.
