A man hitchhiking along Highway 101 discovered a fatal accident Sunday evening, after hearing cries for help.

Oregon State Police say they were coming from the driver of a vehicle that had veered off the highway and plunged down the wooded ravine about a mile north of Cannon Beach, 12 hours earlier.

Emergency crews and police found the wreckage about 40 feet down the embankment. The driver, 21-year-old Gabriela Rayon of Vancouver, was badly hurt; her passenger, 23-year-old Ruth Delgado of Los Angeles, was dead.

Preliminary investigation indicates the 2004 Chevrolet sedan was traveling southbound on Highway 101, when it left the roadway. It careened down the embankment and struck a tree, before coming to rest on the ground in heavy brush. It was not visible from the roadway.

Rayon was taken to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland where she is listed in fair condition.

Both occupants were using seat belts.

OSP troopers and detectives from the Astoria Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Trooper Greg Schuerger is the lead investigator.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Clatsop County Sheriff's Office, Cannon Beach Police Department, Cannon Beach Fire & Rescue, Medix, and ODOT.
