Lightning sparks fires, cuts power

Thunderstorms sparked fires and knocked out power early Friday morning in the Willamette Valley.

The storms formed over the central valley and moved north.

Conditions have been extremely dry, so lightning easily started several brush fires. Rain helped to keep them from growing large.  Firefighters contained all of them.

A Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue crew in Sherwood was working on a brush fire when a lightning bolt hit a tree knocking off the top.  They had to run to get out of the way.  No one was hurt.

The lightning caused power outages to more than 5,000 customers of Portland General Electric.  Most of the outages were in Marion and Polk counties.
