The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners has approved a new policy to help free up space in the jail. After April 15th, the county jail stop ICE holds for minor offenders.
The federal government requests that counties hold undocumented workers for 48 hours, so immigration agents can pick them up for investigation.
Last year, the Multhomah County jail had 913 early releases, because of overcrowding. Sheriff Dan Staton told commissioners that with dwindling county resources he's looking for every economy he can find to maintain safety.
The county will continue to hold undocumented people facing felony or Class A misdemeanors for ICE agents.
