ODOT launches new traffic tools

Posted July 10th, 2014 @ 9:59am

ODOT is starting to use upgraded reader boards to post freeway times to major intersections.

Automated sensors on the freeways determine the speed of the traffic and determine the time on the reader boards.

In a few weeks, ODOT will also turn on variable speed limit signs.  They're warnings that slower traffic is ahead.

The goal is to reduce the number of secondary crashes that happen when traffic slows quickly.  It's hoped that these signs will give drivers warning to drive slower and expect the backup.
