World's First Non-Profit Pub?

A new pub in Northeast Portland is, as far as co-founder Ryan Saari knows, the first non-profit pub in the world. When you visit the Oregon Public House, you'll be offered three menus: food, drink and charities. Saari says the profits from purchases - after they pay for operations and a staff of a few full-time employees - go to a smattering of local, trusted charities based on guests' preferences.

The pub is now open in Portland's Woodlawn Neighborhood at 700 N.E. Dekum, the former home of a controversial medical marijuana café. Saari says it took the work of more than 100 volunteers to develop the concept and renovate the building.

"For about three years almost now we've been remodeling, building and we've done it with 100-percent volunteers,"

Entrées range in price from $8 to $10. The rotating beer tap offers 12 brews. The charities menu will change periodically, too, offering up to 10 local non-profits to go with your burger and barley wine.
