Fortnite has been labeled one of the most addictive video games out there. Fortnite has player vs player (PVP) combat within an environment that can be broken down and rebuilt. The premise of the game is to be the last player standing. You search the world for weapons and building materials to aid you in your quest. Building structures and weapons is crucial to gameplay.
With the game being offered for free on PC, Xbox One, PS4, mobile, and Switch has made the game one of the biggest trends over the past year.
Now Fortnite and other online games has been cited as a reason for divorce in over 200 cases according to Divorce Online. A spokesperson for the company was quoted as saying that drinking, drugs, and gambling addictions have plagued marriages for years, but now digital mediums are also causing breakdowns of relationships. Alongside drugs, alcohol and gambling addictions such as "online pornography, online gaming and social media, [make] no surprise to us that more and more people are having relationship problems because of our digital addictions."
While our online addictions are not effecting a staggering amount of relationships it is roughly 5% of the 4,665 petitions we have handled since the beginning of the year and as one of the largest filers of divorce petitions in the UK, is a pretty good indicator."
While it isn't extremely likely that a video game is going to cause a divorce, video games are extremely addicting. Video games like Fortnite with no solid ending are more addictive than regular single player games that have story lines and are based around completing a goal.
PsychGuides did acknowledge that most addictions with video games are short lived. If someone who is addicted to video games, in the short term, it could cause hunger or even fatigue if they are also skipping sleep. If not addressed these issues could form into a full blown eating disorder or sleeping troubles.
