Bohemian Rhapsody Takes Over The Box Office
The Queen biopic starring Remi Malek brought in $50 million over it's first weekend, despite poor critic reviews. The Playlist called the movie an "embarrassingly unprepared to cover the life of its subject — Freddie Mercury," and that the film is "like trying to hit that famed high B flat on 'Galileo' without a warm-up."
Mike Ryan from Uproxx called the movie a "dirty pool." Saying that "either one of the next two things are true: Either the surviving members of Queen still resent the fact that so much of their legacy is wrapped up in Freddie Mercury that they had to make this revisionist history of a movie, or the surviving members are so cinematically tone deaf they inadvertently made a movie that sure comes off like that’s what they were trying to do."
Even with these reviews, Bohemian Rhapsody is the second largest music biopic released, right behind Straight Outta Compton's $60.2 million opening weekend in 2015. Bohemian Rhapsody is on track to be a success for the studio, making almost their entire $52 million budget back in the opening weekend alone.
The flick more than doubled the earnings of Disney's The Nutcracker and The Four Realms opening weekend, which only brought in $20 million. This is a surprising loss for the big mouse as the movie had a budget of $125 million. The movie only scored a 34% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Alec Baldwin Disputes Assault Allegations
Actor Alec Baldwin was arrested in New York City Friday night after allegedly punching someone over a parking spot. Baldwin has denied the allegations on Twitter stating that the situation was "egregiously misstated as today’s story."
Spokesperson Det. Sophia Mason said that he has been charged with misdemeanor assault and harassment and has been released from the NYPD's 10th Precinct. He was allegedly upset after a parking spot was stolen that Baldwin was planning on using. Baldwin then punched the victim in the face. The victim was transported to the hospital where he was in stable condition.
Baldwin was given a desk appearance ticket, which means he will be called in to appear in front of a judge at a later date.
