'Haunting at Hill House' Was Supposed To Have a Much Different Ending

Haunting at Hill House is one of my favorite original series from Netflix. I love horror, and binged the entire first season over one weekend.

SPOILERS AHEAD, IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED HAUNTING AT HILL HOUSE CLOSE OUT OF THIS ARTICLE NOW.

The final scenes of Haunting at Hill House showed the Crain family finally getting some easiness in their lives. After all they deserve it right?

Luke celebrates 2 years clean and sober. Shirley and Kevin have reconciled their marriage, as well as Steve and Leigh are back together with a baby on the way.

I personally did not notice this in the finale, but a friend of mine pointed out that Theo and Trish got married as well. Since a friend of mine noticed that they are both wearing rings in the cake scene.

In a sad/happy ending, the Dudley's finally get the chance to be with their passed children.

Hugh Crain goes back to Hill House as well so that he can be with Liv and Nell.

According to an interview with Thrillist, Haunting at Hill House was supposed to have a much different ending.

All these happy endings were originally supposed to have long rectangular windows... which means the epilogue was going to take place in the red room.

Nell reveals in the ending that the red room was open the whole time.

To Luke, it was his tree house...

Nell's play room...

Steve's game room...

and something else special to each Crain.

"One thing I can say is that we talked for a very, very long time about putting the Red Room window, that weird vertical window, in the background of this shot. And I ultimately decided not to. It was too cruel. But there was a lot of talk that this peace might not be real. In the version we ended up going with, I think it absolutely is real."

Here's to hoping if we get a second season of Haunting at Hill House, that the Crain's happiness lasts slightly longer than 10 minutes.

Which ending do you prefer? The original or alternate?
