Sunday Parkways Comes To East Portland

Portland Sunday Parkways presented by Kaiser Permanente, Portland’s favorite open streets event, has a new, exciting route connecting people to four East Portland parks. Join the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) Sunday, Aug. 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Portland Sunday Parkways is a free public event that closes streets to cars and opens them for people to walk, bike, roll, stroll, and play in the streets and parks.

Sunday Parkways offers exciting activities for people of all ages. Check out food vendors, musical performances, dance classes, and community services. The East Portland Sunday Parkways event page showcases the full lineup of performances and activities, ranging from opera to Zumba, hip-hop dancing to roller skating.

This past June, Sunday Parkways kicked off its 15th year in the Cully neighborhood. Thousands came together to dance, enjoy music, and celebrate the in-person return of a beloved Portland tradition. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, PBOT had offered self-guided and virtual events in 2020 and 2021.

“We're so excited for this weekend's Sunday Parkways as it provides an amazing opportunity to build community in East Portland,” said Transportation Director Chris Warner. “June's event in Cully was a great success. Sunday Parkways is such a special event because it encourages Portlanders to get outside, come together, and celebrate our shared values of health and mobility."

The East Portland Sunday Parkways route features 4.5 miles of two-way streets to enjoy car-free. Start anywhere on the route and bike, walk, roll, or stroll to find the four featured parks. Enjoy free activities and entertainment as you go from park to park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Text EAST to 888-520-0526 for event updates!

Streets along the route will be closed to motorized traffic for the day except for limited access for people living on the route. There will be designated points for motorized traffic to cross the route, but we encourage people to postpone their trips or work around these closures from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to avoid long delays. If you live on the route and need access to/from your home, please check in with a volunteer to get in/out safely.

Those driving on nearby arterial streets such as E Burnside Street, SE Stark Street, and SE 122nd Avenue, should expect delays as well. Flaggers will be on hand at the busiest intersections to control traffic and ensure everyone can enjoy Sunday Parkways safely.

The Pedestrian Party, a community walk organized by Oregon Walks, Multnomah County REACH, and The Rosewood Initiative will leave from Lincoln City Park at 11:30 a.m. and end at Parklane Park.

“It's really exciting to see a big event like Sunday Parkways happening in our own neighborhood for the community to enjoy," said Rosewood Initiative Executive Director Sabrina Wilson. "We know the importance of providing accessible ways to get outside and enjoy the summer while promoting safe biking, walking, and rolling in East Portland. We are so excited to be collaborating with PBOT and Oregon Walks to play a part in this!"

People are encouraged to sign-up for the Pedestrian Party event via EventBrite

Sunday Parkways has also partnered with organizations to offer programming for people with disabilities. Community members can interact with Adaptive BIKETOWN, Every Body AthleticsCHAP, and White Cane Safety
