T&D Dog of the Week: Sitka

Sitka is a 4 year 7 month old, 86 pound Akita.  He’s SUCH an amazing dog! Sitka loves playing with balls, stuffies, squeakies, and rope toys and adores having his belly rubbed. He does beautifully on leash, regularly looking back while on walks to ‘check in’. He also occasionally stops, sits, and looks back to let you know he’s ready for a treat.  And, oh, does this guy LOVE treats! Sitka needs a low-traffic home that doesn’t have little kids, but he’s fine with older kids. You see, lots of chaotic household activity makes him nervous and worried and causes him to pant, pace, and shake. That’s a tough way to live…He does fine being left alone at home without having accidents, and is used to having a fully-fenced yard to play in with his family. He likes to go for rides in cars and knows sit, down, stay, come, leave it, and drop it, and he knows to politely wait for his food and to take treats gently. He does well going to grooming appointments and being boarded, and has done well with other dogs in those situations, though he would like to meet any potential canine companions before going home with them. Sitka does have an autoimmune disease of the skin that’s caused by an abnormal immune system. The skin develops crusts and may develop secondary infections. He is currently being treated with prednisone, a steroid, to help suppress the immune system. He will be on this medication long-term to control the skin lesions. This disease has a waxing and waning course, meaning that it will come and go over his lifetime. You really couldn’t ask for a much sweeter dog than Sitka. Is he the guy for you? If so, you can fill out the questionnaire at the bottom of his profile and someone from Oregon Humane will call to talked to you more about him.
