T&D Dog of the Week: Mason

This week we’d like to feature Mason as our dog of the week! Mason - Oregon Humane Society  He has a video- and what a cute video it is!  Mason is a 2 year 3 month old, 70 lb American Staffordshire Terrier mix. What is the mix, you wonder? Well, I’ll tell you. We had his DNA tested and it turns out Mason is 86% Staffie, 5% Boxer, 3% Pyranees, 2% Parson Russell Terrier and 2% Portguese Water Dog! This big sweet lap dog loves stuffed toys—and peanut butter. OH, he loves peanut butter! When he came to us he was quite a leash puller, but he’s been very good at learning impulse control and walking nicely with a head halti walking tool. And his favorite way to go for walks is with a stuffed toy in his mouth. I mean, how cute is that??!

Mason is looking for a dog experienced person or family. He needs someone who can continue to follow through with consistent positive training and lots of exercise. He is a snuggle bug who can still get rowdy. For that reason, he needs to go to a home without little children (he might knock them over), but he would do fine with sturdy, older kiddos. He’s done well in his ‘meets’ with most other dogs, but he can be picky with some so he will need to meet any potential canine companions before going home.

Here are some observations from a volunteer who works with him almost daily. She says, “Mason is so smart! He just needs to learn what is expected of him and he is happy to learn. He likes people very much. In the mornings he chases soft squeakies but what he really wants to do is play tug. He is a polite tugger and doesn't come after my hands. He loves to do food find - he's an ace at it. He was absolutely amazing from the first time that I put a halti on him. He likes to be petted. I always think he looks a lot older than he is but he's quite young. He is doing very very well at controlling his impulse to jump up and take a toy or treat that he wants. He has a very strong sit. He will do darn near anything for peanut butter. He looks at other dogs but, in my experience, doesn't bark or pull toward them. He is a wonderful young dog but he does need someone consistent and kind and positive to keep him on the right track.”

Does Mason sound like he might be the perfect addition to your family? If so, please fill out the questionnaire at the bottom of his profile and someone from OHS will give you a call to chat more about him.
