TD&L Dog of the Week: Tulip

This week we'd like to feature sweet Tulip. Tulip is a gorgeous 5-month-old Shepard mix who currently weighs about 29 pounds (and is still growing). And, she has a video! Tulip - Oregon Humane Society You can see in her video what a smart little cookie she is! She's very trainable and would love to do some fun things with you like agility and hikes.

Tulip is a sweet, active girl who needs a home with a dog-experienced person who can continue working with her to help build her confidence using the same positive reinforcement training methods that we have used here at OHS. Tulip originally arrived to OHS through the Second Chance Program and we have limited history about her past. She was adopted and then returned shortly after due to exhibiting fearful behaviors in home towards strangers – barking, growling, and when significantly overwhelmed, lunging, and nipping. A house with a fully fenced yard in a very quiet area would be Tulip’s dream - NOT an apartment, or a home with lots of hustle and bustle.

Tulip has a history of resource guarding. She panics and does not share food and high value items with people and other dogs. Feed her meals in an area or crate where she can eat undisturbed. Do not allow people to take items from her. Instead, if she has an item or has taken something he should not have, offer her a trade.

Tulip responds best to positive reinforcement and reward-based training methods. Her favorite toy is a tennis ball. Anything negative or forceful causes her arousal or excitement level to increase and will ultimately be counterproductive for both of you. Calm time outs in a soothing spot will help her calm down. Crate training is a must. She will need a safe, calm place to go to chill out and relax if she is too worked up. A crate will provide that safe place for her and a well needed breather for you.

If you think this beautiful young girl would be a great addition to your life, just click on the 'meet me' tab in her profile and schedule some time to come on out to Oregon Humane Society to meet her!
